Adnan is the name of the العرب المستعربة (al'arabu l-musta'ribati) (The Arabized Arabs) -- these are the Arab tribes which trace their ancestry back to the prophet Ishmael (a.s) (Isma'il). They are called the "Arabized Arabs" in the Arabic language to distinguish them from the pure Arabs العرب العاربة (Al'arabu al'aaribati), which were the tribes which descend from tribes which inhabitted the Arabian penninsula since before the arrival of the prophet Ismail (a.s.)

"Adnan" is a very important name because from the "Banu Adnan" (Children of Adnan) come the مضر (muzar) and the ربيعة (rabi'ah) -- Ibn Khaldun referred to the "Arabic language" as لغة مضر (Lughatu Muzarin) i.e. "The language of the Mazarittes". More importantly, the Muzars further break down into many groups -- of them are the Banu Elias bin Muzar -- from this branch comes the tribe of "Banu Qureish" from which come the Banu Hashim, from which came the prophet Muhammad (s). The prophet Muhammad (s) was thus from the "Banu Adnan" or the "Arabized Arabs" i.e. a descendant of Isma'il (a.s) and through him Ibraheem (a.s.)
